Apothecary Equivalents: Weight:


  • 1 scruple  = 20 grains
  • 3 scruples = 1 dram
  • 20 grains (gr)  
  • 60 grains  =  1 dram  
  • 8 drams  =  1 ounce 
  • 1 ounce  =  480 grains 
  • 12 ounces  =  1 pound (lb) 


Apothecary Equivalents: Volume

  • 60 minims  = 1 fluid dram  
  • 8 fluid drams  =  1 fluid ounce  
  • 1 fluid ounce  =  480 minims 
  • 16 fluid ounces  =  1 pint (pt) 
  • 2 pints = 1 quart
  • 4 quarts = 1 gallon



American volume:

  • 1 pint = 2 cups = 16 ounces
  • 1 cup = 16 tablespoons = 8 ounces
  • 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons = 1/2 ounce


British volume:

  • 4 gills = 1 US pint
  • 1 pint = about 2. 1/2  US cups = about 20 ounces
  • 1 cup = about 20.8 US tablespoons = about 10 ounces
  • 1 tablespoon = 4/5 US tablespoon



Volume and Mass:

  • 1 litre = 1,000 grams = 1 kilogram = 34 ounces
  • 1/2 litre = 500 grams = 1 demiliter = 17 ounces
  • 1/4 litre =  250 grams = 8.5 ounces
  • 1 deciliter = 10 grams = 3.5 ounces
  • 1 centiliter = 10 grams = 1/3 ounces = 2 teaspoons
  • 1 milliliter = 1 gram
  • 1 chopine (old measure) = about 1/2 pint = about 8 ounces



Spoon & Wineglass Volumes (often found in French recipes):

  • 1 cuillere à bouche, à soupe = about 1 tablespoon = about 1/2 ounce
  • 1 cuillere à pot = about 1 small ladle = about 2 ounces
  • 1 cuillere à cafe = about 1 level teaspoon
  • 1 verre = 2 deciliters = about 7 ounces
  • 1 verre à Bordeaux = 1 deciliter = about 6 tablespoons = about 3 ounces
  • 1 verre à liqueur = 15 milliliters = about 1 tablespoon = about 1/2 ounce
  • 1 tasse un cafe = about 10 tablespoons = about 2 1/2 ounces
